The Story Behind the Series: Tales of Harriford Grange, Volume 1 Now on Kindle!

I’m super excited to announce that my first book of Christian historical romance short stories is now available on Kindle! Paperback should be available by the end of August.

In this post, I wanted to share with you the story behind the series. You will find a description of the book further down and on my historical romance page in the menu above.

During a rough patch a while back, I was reading a lot of the Christian historical romance novels available at my library. It began to feel like all of the characters were carbon copies of each other. All of the men were devastatingly handsome and overly muscular. They were at least six-and-a-half feet tall, perfect hair, straight teeth, dimple/chin cleft, the works. The women were mostly skinny as a rail with perfect skin, silky hair, and similar spunky personalities. It was exhausting!

I got the urge to write a similar story with characters who are real and relatable and pretty much average. Enter The Doctor’s Daughter. Edith and Colm are characters who have insecurities in both appearance and personality. On from there, I wrote a series of nine short stories and counting. While some of my characters might fit in with a traditional romance in either personality or appearance, I tried not to give them both. However, as much of their description comes from their love interest, they’re often touted to be more wonderful than they might seem to others…as it should be!

All of these stories were created organically in that I came up with the characters and thought, “What would he/she do if I put them in this situation?” It was really a lot of fun! I varied the physical descriptions quite a bit, and I hope every one of my readers can find at least one character in the whole series with whom they can relate in one form or another. If so, I consider my time well spent.

Description of Tales of Harriford Grange, Volume 1:

Put the kettle on and spend a delightful evening with the villagers of Harriford Grange! Join four Christian couples in this series of historical romance short stories as they learn the value of love, forgiveness, and redemption in overcoming misconceptions, prejudice, sexual harassment, and a sordid past.

Set in the style of Jane Austen with a modern twist, the Tales of Harriford Grange tell of the loves and lives of the members of the church of Christ at Harriford Grange, a fictional town in late 1800s England. Four short stories complete this first volume: The Doctor’s Daughter, The Farrier’s Girl, The Butcher’s Lady, and The Shopkeeper’s Love. Some are serious and some lighthearted, but all are sure to warm your heart.

The Doctor’s Daughter is a comedy of errors as the new doctor seeks to woo his nurse, the former doctor’s daughter. Can he overcome her false perceptions and win her heart? Prejudice can take many forms as is seen in The Farrier’s Girl. What will it take to break the ice between the new farrier and the wealthiest girl in town? In The Butcher’s Lady, learning to trust takes center stage. When the butcher discovers the woman he loves is being exploited, can he earn her trust and kindle her love? The last story is a tale of second chances and forgiveness. Will an ex-convict be able to overcome his past to be The Shopkeeper’s Love?
